Hermanas Spokane celebrated their 10th anniversary on March 16, 2012. We are proud to have been in solidarity with our Hermanas in Huisisilapa (Huisi), San Pablo Tacachico, Dept La Libertad, El Salvador, Central America these past years. We have built solid trusting relationships with our Hermanas (women leaders in Huisi) as well as with the town council and the school board. Somebody from Hermanas has visited Huisisilapa at least every 18 months. Between our visits to Huisisilapa, Hermanas Spokane works to be in solidarity with one another so that we can better support our Hermanas and their families in El Salvador. We have supported the school board in their endeavor to become an accredited high school which they accomplished, support some Huisi high graduates pursue college degrees, as well as contribute to community activities and needs when possible. Meanwhile Hermanas Spokane become more aware of issues affecting our Salvadoran counterparts and learn from the patience, hard work and love with which they live their lives.
Hermanas Spokane has started a library fund to support the school and community at large. The library would be used as an additional classroom and provide space for children and adults to enjoy the world of reading. Currently the school has very few books, textbooks or recreational reading material and children and young adults do not have the luxury of owning their own books. A library would be a huge boost to the community. Anyone may contribute to the library fund by donating on this website. Be sure to donate that your donation is for the library. We need to raise $35,000 so stay tuned for additional activities.

Hello Phyllis and Happy Valentine’s Day. I hope that you enjoyed the day and celebrated with your boyfriend and all of your friends.

Yesterday we celebrated the day of love and friendship in our community and we celebrated the beginning of the campaign for mayor of San Pablo Tacachico (Huisisilapa is a caserío [village] that is part of the municipality of Tacachico) for our (political) party FMLN.

The past weeks I have been preparing a training for the 1st and 2nd year high school students that is called “Robbery and Fiscal Evasion” of which the theme is to explain the fiscal invasion to the younger people; explaining the taxes that each of us pays our country because so it is important that the big businesses pay taxes also, etc. The principal role that we played as youth was to understand the changes in our community and the threat that we face with the elections coming up in March, the one where the mayors and representatives are elected in our country.

I am excited because my classes begin on Feb 13 at the university. I am taking 5 classes: Econometrics, Macroeconomics III. Technical English II, English level VIII and Computer s II. Of these classes my favorites are Macroeconomics and English.

One of my goals is to learn to speak and write correctly in English because I like it a lot and it is important for one to know for business and technology, etc.

Te extraño mucho, un gran abrazo. Maira

By Marcos Gálvez

Nov. 20, 2011

Huisisilapa is located in the municipality of San Pablo Tacachico, the department of La Libertad. The community had constructed their houses close to the banks of the Rio Sucio where more than 800 people live. This community began rebuilding their lives in 1992 after having lived as refugees in Honduras because of the civil war (armed conflict).

As in many places in the country, the Tropical Storm 12E, at 1:00 am on Nov 16, 2011, the river Sucio overflowed its banks and surprised Huisisilapa with flooding that continued throughout the day destroying the bridge that unites several municipalities and paralyzed the commerce and movement of the people in this zone, destroying the water system, and the agricultural crops were ruined and lost and put a hold on the education of the children and affected the community psychologically.

After the flooding caused by the tropical storm 12E, the damaged was surveyed of the flooding and after the manual labor of cleaning y relocating their household goods; all of the families returned to their homes. Fortunately the houses were all made of materials that resisted the water and only the buildings constructed with adobe (mud houses) were at risk and of those one kitchen of one of the families was destroyed.

The bridge that was destroyed over the River Sucio was between the towns of El Paisnal and San Pablo Tacachico which has now been fixed with a new style of bridge (bayley and I don’t know what this is) thanks to timely intervention from the Public Works Ministry which now allows the movement of the different communities on this important arterial.

This Friday, Nov. 17, 2011 the water system has been fixed provisionally so as to provide the household water to Huisisilapa thanks to the initiative and collaboration of the community with help from the municipalities of San Pablo Tacachico, El Paisnal, and CRIPDES/UCRES (local non-profits managed by Salvadorans). This water system was destroyed by the violent currents of the River Sucio. The water project benefits 4 communities of about 1500 people. In order to guarantee the continued functioning of the system it is urgent that there is a permanent fix by installing and changing the route of the tubing, installing a new pump that would be submerged and a reconstruction of the area around the water source.

There are currently new plans to reconstruct the water system to prevent future destruction, because this has not been the first time but it has been the worst destruction. The reconstruction will cost around $21,000.00

We cannot forget that the economic deterioration of subsistence in Huisisilapa has been impacted negatively because of the loss of agricultural products such as basic grains of the community most notably the bean crop which suffered the most but also the corn crop was affected. This puts the community at risk at not being able to feed itself. The little bit the people were able to have beyond their food needs was sold to buy other food and items for the house which are not produced in the community. This possibility of selling some of the crops has been reduced substantially.

Psychologically the community has been impacted but of course the 7 families that were flooded out suffer most. During the 20 years that the community has lived in Huisisilapa nothing similar has occurred in fact no one from the community has a memory of this happening in the past 60 years. This could be an indication of the climate change. It is also noted that in some areas around the community the earth has opened up. There is an opening in one of the hills that is about 100 meters long and in some places 5 centimeters wide. If it had continued to rain surely there would have been a mud slide that would have buried some of the houses in the community.

Right now, with regard to water disaster, the community faces the challenge of creating preventative measures and needed mitigation for community safety.

Fortunately, the community has a history of organizational skills that in former emergencies were used and worked. The neighbors organized to help evacuate the affected families and to keep them safe. They helped to recuperate and safeguard the meager family belongings. Thanks to these measures, the material impact was less than it might have been. Nonetheless, the organization must be perfected to have access to the needed materials, equipment, and infrastructure for future emergencies.

Meanwhile the village does not have water. The water pump was down by the river and of course it flooded. Minda said that the municipality of San Pablo Tacachico brought the displaced people water in plastic bags but no one has water for cooking!!! I tried to ask her several times what we can do to help but I didn’t get an answer before we got cut off. I will keep you posted as I receive updates.

Watch for pictures soon.

Below is a new email from Maira telling us about the flooding in El Salvador. Peace. Phyllis

Hola amigas.

I want to let you all know that since last Wednesday (October 5) all classes were cancelled in the country due to a tropical storm in El Salvador. On Friday the President of ES declared a state of emergency in the country as the ground is saturated with water and many families from different departments (states) are being evacuated from their houses because of flooding and mud slides.

In our community of Huisisilapa there has never been so much water in the river and the creek. Last night at 1 in the morning the president of the community counsel Medardo Muños told us via loud speaker that all of the people, approximately 7 houses that live down by the river and the creek below the main road were flooded. The water came into the house and got everything wet; beds, granaries (where the corn is stored), etc. Three families lost their animals (pigs, hens, etc) and in another the kitchen was flooded. Thanks to God all the people are safe. Among the families affected is Maria’s family, Judith and Juan Miguel’s mom/grandmother. (Maria is one of the women leaders and is now well into her seventies so this is devastating.)

The police and people from the mayor’s office came to Huisi very early to verify the damage and see what is necessary to relocate the families.

The bridge that connects San Pablo Tacachico with El Paisnal is not passable as the water is now above the bridge and no one can cross it.

The community counsel is involved in helping the families because it continues to rain and the river is yet to crest.

ABRAZOS DESDE HUISI.

Querida Felicia

Three weeks ago I started a new semester at the university. My new classes are very interesting; my professors are people with a lot of experience. In the next 6 months I need to read three volumes of Capital by Karl Marx for my Political Economics class. That is one of my favorite where we study history from an economic standpoint, the capitalists production system (production, distribution and consumerism and services).

I am also taking another class called Political Science where we are analizing power in all social interactions (political power, economic power, personal power and ideology).

En mis clases de inglés estoy avanzando, estas semanas he aprendido los irregular verbs, el present continuous, el present simple, comparatives and superlatives, past simple of regular and irregular verbs.

In my English class I am advancing. This week I learned irregular verbs, the present perfect, the simple present, comparatives and superlatives, and the past tense of regular and irregular verbs.

With my friend Blanca we have organized a women’s soccer team that has 20 women on the team; 10 are young women who have a family and the others are adolescents. The objective is to create a team to give women more of an opportunity to participate in the community.

Last Sunday we had a small with the young children that I am giving extra classes to. We organized activities and broke a piñata so that the kids has some fun. The children had fun and want to do it again.

Thanks to UCRES, a non-profit organization (this is a branch of CRIPDES in Aguilares), my mom and other women in the community received training and free seeds for a family garden in each of the women’s yards. My mom has planted cucumbers, tomatos, radished, chiles, pipiones and squash at our house. The garden is beautifu. We also now have banana trees so we have a beautiful garden.

I hope that this letter finds you healthy and hoping that you will return to visit up soon in Huisi. We miss you.

The school year in El Salvador is from January or February through October or November depending upon program of study, a particular school, and the level of study, elementary through college. This means that semester break for college students is in July. Mercedes wrote the following letter July 5th.

Note that she references the streets of Huisisilapa. The municipality of San Pablo Tacachico (Tacachico) has promised the paving of some of the roads in the village. The project began close to the beginning of the year but it was not finished before the rainy season which starts in May. The mud situation is better now but for weeks, Hilda’s family had to wade through mud to leave their house. The pavement also widen the streets so people lost their old fencing on the street side of their property and will need to reconstruct once the paving is completed. All in all the community sees te project as an improvement to the rocky, muddy or dusty, and eroded roads. The roads recently paved are the closest to the community square or plaza. Phyllis

Hola,

Everything is well here but we are all under pressure with all our
homework, additional research, and studying for exams. We are all
stressed from all the work, but it is almost the end of the term when
we will have time to rest a little and take a break from all the
pressure.

aprendiendo mucho.

In the community, the street paving project is almost complete—people
are really happy because the streets finally won’t be full of mud and
because the fields are growing well this year. The children that we
give classes to are also very happy and we are happy that they are
learning so much.

Thank you for all your support, and if you ever have questions for us,
don’t hesitate to ask.

Thank you again for everything; we are all very grateful to you all.

Mercedes, Maira y Pedro

hOLA FELICIA Hello Phyllis

¿Cómo has estado? ¿Qué haces? How have you been? What are you doing?

Thanks to God, I successfully finished the semester with good grades, new friends and new knowledge. Now it is time to rest and renew my energies.

I have been making the most of these two weeks of vacation as I have done a lot. I have helped my mom with house chores (wash clothes, cook, sweep and wash dishes). I have reviewed my English, read, slept and rested.

Also I have taken advantage of this time to continue helping the chileren with their classes here at home.. I have helped them with reading and writing and they have learned a lot. I work with 6 children of vrious ages and in different grades. There are two who are in 4th grade who did not know their vowels and wrote their letters backwards and their penmenship was terrible so that no on could read their writing. I feel very proud that they have learned a lot as they now know their vowels and now I am teaching them the alphabet and we are at the letter S.

The only difficulties that we have had is the lack of teaching materials because I don’t have adequate materials such as crayons, pencils, erasers, notebooks and books for each to read. I bought a reader with the syllabus broken down and made copies on large pieces of paper. This way I can give more individualized attention to each one and Wil the school director has givem me some materials like pencils and copies which has been a great help.

Other news is that they are working on the roads in the afternoons so we have a big space now for the children to play jump rope (we jump with a long rope), hide and seek, and soccer is very entertaining.

We miss you a lot and hope that you are healthy. We send you many hugs and energy. We hope you return to Huisi soon.

Muchos saludos de la familia.

Many greetings from the family.

Maira
